Some days ago my new toy arrived thanks to the US Postal Service.
After paying the post guy the customs it revealed it's contents:
The Eye-Fi Card is a relatively new invention - the combination of a SD memory card with an "WiFi" access built in. Turning in fact every camera (or other device) the card is inserted in a WiFi enabled device.
The basic idea is, that the moment you shoot a picture it is automatically transferred to your computer (and if you like also automatically uploaded to Flickr or some other places).
To operate the card you need (cite from the official support site):
What are the requirement & compatibility specifications of the Eye-Fi Card?
The Eye-Fi Card requirement and compatibility specifications are as follows:
- Eye-Fi Card requires Internet connection to set-up and Wi-Fi network for wireless transfers
- Eye-Fi Card works with virtually all digital cameras accepting SD memory cards
- Eye-Fi Card works with 802.11g, 802.11b and backwards-compatible 802.11n wireless networks
- Eye-Fi software works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS-X (10.3 and 10.4)
- Eye-Fi software works with Internet Explorer 6 and 7 (Windows only), Firefox 2.0 (Windows and Macintosh)
What is not that clearly mentioned on the support site (well I didn't find it) is that you need a DHCP server too.
Eye-Fi doesnt work with a static IP address.
The card itself is setup with a small USB reader device, and after that it should be self-sufficient.
Should, because I have been to lazy yet to install me a DHCP, but well ...
Nevertheless a great idea.
Update:
Ah yes, nearly forgot: The official site for it is http://eye.fi (at least a Finnish domain - how genious ☺).
